Mission Statement: To provide an
environment in which individuals and groups can
experience the cultural life of early Arkansaw.
Objective: To
develop and maintain locations in which to hold
rendezvous and other events typical of the early
Arkansaw time period.
EARA is a non-profit organization dedicated
to preserving our Arkansas heritage. We specialize in
the activities and concerns of the "common folk" that
populated this area before Arkansas became a state in
1836. We are an all-volunteer organization, and work in
cooperation with public schools, parks and museums to
provide programs in which the public can experience
frontier life first-hand.
"These people make me think about history!" A quote from nine
year old Zane Huss during the keelboat "Aux Arc" encampment at Jonesville,
Louisiana, December 29th, 2009.
Our activities are designed to provide hands-on
experience for the general public using experiential
archaeology and living history demonstrations. Our
members boast a wide variety of skills including animal
husbandry, food preparation, clothing styles and
manufacturing, home-building techniques, furniture
making, shingle making, spinning, weaving and knitting,
natural dyeing, early lighting, games and recreation
and other various cultural aspects of early Arkansaw
life. One of our most prized possessions is our 40-foot
wooden keelboat, the
Aux Arc, a replica of the
boats that commonly floated Arkansas rivers in the
days before the steamboat.
With so much to choose from, you never know what will
be happening at one of our gatherings!
