Archaeological Dig at Cadron Settlement Park
By looking at the front of the blockhouse, you would never know what is happening
around back. We have marked this
area with orange construction fencing,
which will hopefully discourage any unauthorized digging. In a typical
digging day, we have lots of help.
Here is an aerial view of the screening area.
The digging is very precise.
Each person digs in a one-square-meter area (defined by the strings) down
a depth of 5 centimeters. This is called a "level", and when it is finished,
Lynita marks the information on a chalkboard,
photographs it, and fills out the paperwork.
Everything we find goes in a
plastic bag, which is also labeled
to identify location and depth. As you can see, we are finding a real
mixture of things, both
trash and treasure, indicating lots
of activity in this area. It is a lot of hard work to dig the dirt,
put it in buckets, and
screen it for artifacts. Sometimes
we're not sure if it's any
artifact or not. But we
all manage to have a great time.
At the end of the day, we pack everything up,
and consider how much more we need to do.

Traveling Arkansas with Chuck Dovish
On July 31 - August 1, we took the keelboat on its first 'overnighter', and took Chuck Dovish and cameraman (???) in tow. We traveled from Toadsuck Lock and Dam (in Conway) to Murray Park in (Little Rock), and spent the night on a sandbar on the Arkansas River. This trip was featured on an episode of Traveling Arkansas on AETN, and is probably the most well-documented keelboat trip we have ever had. The pictures tell the story.
In preparation, we attached the sail and raised the flag

hitting the water ~~ ready to go ~~ under sail
We found a new use for the sail . . . it is now a sun shade
Happy minstrels enjoy the day, but the work is hard so we take a break
Stopping for the night, we raise a tent, but others decide to stay on the boat
On the second day, it was HOT but we kept our spirits up with Tim at the helm
We were quite a sight on the big river
To make better time, we rowed and rowed and rowed some more
Finally, we approached Little Rock and entered Murray Lock and Dam and soon thereafter we were on solid ground.
Crew members wonder What have we done?
